2. Re White: I'm much less likely to read defending Australia after you mentioned his saying that we should tell America that we aren't going to go to war with China. Surely this is a case if ever there was in which strategic ambiguity is dominant???

A plausible scenario for this is presented in the opening chapters of Thomas Fleming's "The New Dealers' War -- F.D.R. and the War Within World War II"
America is the land for Europeans who hated Europe. Australia could be the land for Asians who hate Asia - the collectivism, the family dynasties, the conformity etc. If we were to become a land of Asians, that's the only scenario that I would find acceptable.

If people are coming to Australia to flee conformity, I have some bad news for them.
Then what exactly are we defending in Australia if we're just as conformist as the Asians?
