The problem right out the gate was that they couldn't make the bad guys evil just because. The writers were completely stuck between a Rousseau conception of human nature as inherently good, and a historical-materialist frame for all events. So they stuck on the "climate-induced fertility collapse" angle (despite being barely mentioned in the book) to justify Gilead, because you can't just have people be dicks because of humanity's fallen nature. But when you rationalize a bad guy, you end up making them sympathetic, and a show like this can't allow that to happen, so they ended up bringing back original sin but just basing it off sex and race.
So in a way from the start it was deeply conservative in that it concedes that the left-wing conception of human nature wasn't capable of accounting for atrocity.
BUT the real issue with the show was that it was BDSM porn for liberal women who have a submissive kink but can't just say so. Simple fact is, anyone who kept watching this show and the abuse it constantly threw at women must have liked it. I mean this seriously. All of the politics was just window dressing for girl porn. There is not a single woman who watched this show past season 2 that isn't into spanking FULL STOP.
Also I like the article *and* the headline, but still want to quibble that it's obviously not reactionary but just deeply ordinarily human. What else would motivate/redeem a tortured protagonist but love of family. Anybody from Else Ury to Michael Bay would endorse this obvious turn of the story.
This is so exhausting, I wish they did those anti-Kickstarters where you could donate money for certain projects to be shuttered.
