I would probably take the assertion that Iranian hostages were not released due to Reagan’s campaign manager with a grain of salt—the author of the book is writing with the clear goal of rehabilitating Carter. Even in the review, the next sentence following your excerpt acknowledges that “there’s no definitive proof, and many sources say otherwise”.
There's a modern and incorrect belief that earlier societies were about all men subjugating all women. But the hierarchy - at least prior to the agricultural age but very often well into it - was Alpha men and their close associated, then good looking women, then ok looking women, then everyone else. It was a pretty wretched place being a low man on the totem pole.
